The EU's Energy Transition at a cross-road: Where do we stand? How to transition cost-effectively to 2030?

The lunch event was cancelled due to the horrifying attacks which took place in Brussels. Our deep sympathy is with the victims.

  • Place: Brussels
  • 22.03.2016, 11:30 - 14:00

The lunch event had initially been designed to launch two new studies by Agora Energiewende. We will keep you informed about their publication and also a possible alternative date for the event. In order to receive all relevant information we recommend to subscribe to our newsletter if you are not yet on our mailing list.

The first study addresses the status quo of the European energy transition. Based on recent statistical data, it identifies major developments in the European energy mix and in greenhouse gas emissions by way of accessible charts and graphs. This serves as background for highlighting key political challenges in the years to come such as enhancing energy system flexibility and dealing with inflexible baseload capacity.

The second study develops a consistent mix of measures (the “power-market pentagon”) that will allow for a cost-efficient transition to an approximate share of 50 percent renewable electricity in the power system by 2030. Its main focus is on interactions between EU power market design, EU emissions trading, national coal phase-out initiatives, renewable energy investments, and measures for safeguarding system adequacy.

The papers will be presented by Patrick Graichen and Mara Marthe Kleiner, Agora Energiewende, and commented by experts from the UK-based think tank Sandbag and the International Energy Agency (IEA). This will be followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A session.
