Recently, countries outmatch each other with record low renewable cost figures. 3.5 US$ ct. for solar PV in India, below 2 US$ ct. for onshore wind in Morocco, even zero public support for offshore wind projects in Germany. It is hardly contested anymore that wind and solar technologies will soon be the cheapest of all electricity generation technologies. However, do these catchy figures tell the full story? What are the implications for the reliability of a system if it is more and more dominated by weather-dependent, zero-marginal cost technologies? And, how to manage the transformation of the energy sector and to overcome political inertia and path dependencies?
This workshop brings together think tanks from around the world active in energy system transformations. The aim is
- to deepen our joint understanding of how system reliability can be ensured cost-effectively,
- to share best and worst practice examples and
- to strengthen the network amongst some of the most cutting-edge think tanks.
We will get latest insights from world leading experts in key geographies, and we will deeply immerse into the world of grids, markets and flexibility.
The workshop format will be flexible and interactive. We would like to invite everyone to share her/his own perspectives and specific country experience throughout the day. Time slots are reserved in the programme for additional short and focused presentations.
