Agora Energiewende is a joint initiative of the Stiftung Mercator and the European Climate Foundation.
Preventing dangerous climate change is one of Stiftung Mercator’s central objectives, which is why it is committed to a successful energy transition in Germany as a trigger for global climate change mitigation. In establishing Agora Energiewende in 2013, it created an independent think tank and discussion platform which joins actors from politics, civil society, business and academia in searching for ways in which to design an electricity supply system based on renewable energies.
Stiftung Mercator is a private and independent foundation. Through its work it strives for a society characterized by openness to the world, solidarity and equal opportunities. In this context it concentrates on strengthening Europe; increasing the educational success of disadvantaged children and young people, especially those of migrant origin; driving forward climate change mitigation and promoting science and the humanities. Stiftung Mercator symbolizes the connection between academic expertise and practical project experience. One of Germany’s leading foundations, it is active both nationally and internationally. Stiftung Mercator feels a strong sense of loyalty to the Ruhr region, the home of the founding family and the foundation’s headquarters.
European Climate Foundation
"The world is watching the Energiewende in Germany," says Johannes Meier, Managing Director of the European Climate Foundation (ECF). "We are sending a signal to the international political community. This signal is that the conversion of the world’s fourth largest economy to a climate-friendly energy supply can succeed."
ECF is a joint initiative of several large internationally active foundations in Europe and the United States that address the threat of global warming. Since 2008, it operates as a part of the ClimateWorks Network advancing effective climate protection in Europe. In the strategy of ECF, Germany plays a key role being the largest and economically strongest country of the EU. The Energiewende shows that the conversion to an environmentally- and climate-friendly energy system is possible.
